Men's Soccer Suffers Difficult Extra-Time Loss to Sewanee, 2-1

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team suffered its second extra-time loss in a week-and-a-half Saturday, falling to the visiting Sewanee Tigers, 2-1, in the second extra-time period on Salamone Field.

The Stormy Petrels held a 1-0 lead for much of the game's first 80 minutes. They took an early lead when junior midfielder Nick Muntean continued his torrid stretch of late with his third goal of the season in the 15th minute. He took a long pass from senior defender Phillip Rawson, brought it down, and beat the Sewanee goalkeeper to the near side for the 1-0 lead.

The Petrels got the better of the chances in the first half, outshooting the visiting Tigers, 10-6, over the course of the period. In the second half, Sewanee began asserting themselves a little more, as they were able to fire 11 shots for the period. The Petrels held them off for the majority of the second period, but the Tigers finally equalized off a free kick in the 80th minute.

For the final 10 minutes of regulation, the Petrels went in search of the winning goal. They came close several times, as Muntean forced two big saves by the Sewanee goalkeeper and put another shot just wide of the net. However, the game went into extra time, marking the second game in the last three that has gone past regulation for Oglethorpe.

The Petrels started the first period of extra time by almost winning it. Sewanee's goalkeeper just got a fingertip to senior Eyal Schechter's header to open the period, saving the game for the Tigers. Going into the second extra-time period, Sewanee almost won the game in the early part of the stanza. Sophomore goalkeeper Vaughn Moore made a spectacular diving save to keep the Petrels in the game. However just moments later, Sewanee obtained a throw-in deep in the Oglethorpe end. They used a long throw-in to score the game-winning goal in the 106th minute.

For the game, Oglethorpe outshot Sewanee 24-21. However, Sewanee put nine shots on goal to Oglethorpe's eight. Oglethorpe took six corner kicks to the Tigers' three.

Individually, Moore kept the Petrels in the game for long stretches, recording a season-high seven saves on the afternoon. Muntean fired 10 shots over the course of the game, putting four of them on goal and scoring once. Senior forward Carlos Gaston fired four shots of his own, putting one on goal.

With the loss, Oglethorpe falls to 5-7-1 on the season, 0-2 in SAA play. They'll look to recover next weekend when they embark on a two-game road trip. They'll first travel to Birmingham, Ala., on Friday to take on Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m. Eastern. They'll then continue the trip next Sunday, when they go to Jackson, Miss., to do battle with Millsaps at 4 p.m. Eastern.
