Box Score The Oglethorpe volleyball team won the first set of its match against Centre Saturday afternoon in Danville, Ky., but they went on to lose the next three, falling to the homestanding Colonels, 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21).
The Petrels got some solid performances, especially in the first set, when they hit .355 as a team. Senior outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko led the team with 11 kills on the afternoon. Freshman setter Katie Stewart recorded 27 assists and 13 digs, while senior libero Megan Makuck recorded 13 digs of her own. Freshman outside hitter Kaitlyn Woodruff hit .400 over the course of the match.
In the first set, the Petrels fell behind 5-4 in the early-going, but ran off five straight points to take a 9-5 advantage. Centre cut it to three, 12-9, but the Petrels ran off six straight points to push way ahead, 18-9. From there, they cruised to the 25-16 first-set victory.
However, Centre answered back in the second set. They jumped out to an 11-6 lead, then continued to build the advantage as the set wore on. They eventually built it to an eight-point bulge and wound up winning the set fairly easily, 25-19.
The third set was more of the same, with the Colonels bouncing out to a 12-3 lead. The Petrels got the margin back to within seven a couple of times, the last of which came at 20-13. However, Centre was able to pull away from there, winning the set, 25-16.
The fourth set was more competitive, though. The Petrels took a 6-4 lead, but watched as Centre went on another run, reeling off five straight points and re-taking the lead, 9-6. However, the Petrels stormed back and re-took the lead for themselves, 12-11. Unfortunately, it was the last lead they would have. Centre slowly pushed out to a three-point lead and held it for most of the rest of the match. The Petrels cut the lead back to two, 23-21, late. Centre closed it out from there, though, winning the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
The Petrels fall to 13-12 on the season, 2-7 in SAA play, with the loss. They'll get right back to action on Sunday, when they travel down to Tennessee to take on Sewanee at 2 p.m. Eastern time. The Petrels beat Sewanee, 3-2, for their first SAA win of the year in the first meeting between the two teams.
