The Oglethorpe men's soccer team suffered a 4-1 defeat to Birmingham-Southern in Birmingham, Ala., Friday evening. The Petrels held a 1-0 lead, but gave up four goals in the final 25 minutes of play.

Oglethorpe got off to an excellent start, scoring in the 29th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Nick Muntean continued his excellent performance of late, slotting home his fourth goal of the season. He scored off an assist from freshman Hanno Antoni, back in the lineup after missing several weeks due to injury. 

The Petrels held the 1-0 lead at haltime and maintained it past the 65-minute mark. However, the homestanding Panthers equalized off a penalty kick in the 66th minute. This seemed to open the floodgates, as they scored again to take the lead in the 68th minute, then scored twice more, once in the 75th and once in the 83rd, pushing their advantage out to the final three-goal margin. 

The Petrels outshot Birmingham-Southern 14-13 over the course of the game, but the Panthers scored on four of the seven shots they put on goal. Meanwhile, the Petrels put six of their 14 shots on goal. Birmingham-Southern took eight corner kicks to Oglethorpe's three while making five saves to the three that freshman Oglethorpe goalkeeper Vaughn Moore was able to make.

Muntean fired five shots on the day, putting three on goal. Senior forward Carlos Gaston recorded a pair of shots, putting both on goal.

The loss drops the Petrels to 5-8-1 on the season, 0-3 in SAA play. They'll continue their road trip in Jackson, Miss., on Sunday, where they'll take on Millsaps at 4 p.m. Eastern.
