Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team took a 1-0 lead in the first half against Millsaps in Jackson, Miss., Sunday. However, they couldn't hold it, giving up a goal late in the first half and another in the second, losing to the home-standing Majors, 2-1.
The Stormy Petrels got off to a good start in the 12th minute of the game as senior forward Carlos Gaston finished a cross from junior midfielder Seth Prieto to give Oglethorpe a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for Gaston, as well as Prieto's first assist.
The Petrels were able to hold that lead for 13 minutes, but Millsaps equalized the score in the 25th, making it 1-1 at haltime. Then, the Majors scored again in the 51st minute on a penalty kick, giving themselves a 2-1 advantage.
Just moments later, Millsaps saw a player red-carded, giving Oglethorpe a man advantage. For the remainder of the game, Oglethorpe laid seige to the Millsaps goal. They fired 11 shots over the course of the second half, putting four of them on target. However, they never could find another goal.
For the game, Oglethorpe outshot Millsaps 20-11, including 8-6 on goal. They also took eight corner kicks to the seven that Millsaps took.
In addition to his goal, Gaston took a total of six shots, putting four of them on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Vaughn Moore stopped four Millsaps shots on the afternoon, as well.
The loss drops the Petrels to 5-9-1 on the season, 0-4 in SAA play. They'll look to get back on-track next weekend when they host a pair of SAA contests, the final two home games of the season. They'll welcome in Rhodes Friday at 4 p.m., then take on Hendrix for Senior Day Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
