Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team completed a 2-0 weekend and picked up a win on Senior Day in the process on Sunday, blanking the visiting Hendrix Warriors, 3-0, at Salamone Field.
The Petrels had the better of play in the first half, outshooting Hendrix 9-6 over the period, but the game stayed scoreless into the haltime break. However, the Petrels dominated the second half, outshooting the Warriors 11-3 over the course of the period.
They finally broke through in the 54th minute when they earned a penalty kick. Junior midfielder Martijn Edelman stepped up to take it and he buried it for a 1-0 lead and the first goal of his career. Then, with the Petrels going forward in seach of a second, they got it in the 68th minute. Junior midfielder Nick Muntean bagged his fifth goal of the season when he took a low cross from sophomore forward Joe McGee and hammered it into the lower-right corner of the goal.
With the outcome already pretty much sewed up, senior forward Eyal Schechter removed all doubt, celebrating his Senior Day in style with a tally from the top of the box, his second of the season. He got an assist from midfielder Bailey Pinto on the play. The goal gave the Petrels a 3-0 advantage.
For the game, the Petrels outshot Hendrix 20-9, including 5-2 on goal. They also took three corner kicks to the Warriors' one.
Sophomore goalkeeper Vaughn Moore earned his third clean sheet of the season and his second of the weekend. He made both saves that he was required to make to see the shutout stand up. Muntean maintains his SAA lead for total shots, firing seven on the afternoon and putting two on goal. He's fired 72 shots on the season. He also currently sits fourth in the league in goals (5) and points (14).
Defender Phillip Rawson, midfielders Aleks Tanjga and Austin Fiddler, and forwards Carlos Gaston and Schechter were all honored for their contributions to the Oglethorpe men's soccer program during Senior Day festivities before the game.
The win improves Oglethorpe's record to 7-9-1 on the season, 2-4 in SAA play. They'll try to improve their seeding for the upcoming SAA Tournament next weekend when they travel to Danville, Ky., on Saturday to take on Centre in the final regular season game for both teams. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
