Box Score MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Oglethorpe men's soccer team lost its SAA opener Friday in Mount Berry, Ga., falling to the in-state rival Berry Vikings, 1-0. The loss drops the Stormy Petrels to 5-6-1, 0-1 in SAA play.
Neither team got much in the way of an attack going in the first half, as Oglethorpe outshot Berry 4-3 over the course of the period, putting two shots on goal.
In the second half, the Petrels fell behind early, however. Berry scored the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute, forcing the visitors to chase the game. The Petrels fought valiantly, throwing everything they could at the Berry goal. They fired five shots in the second half, but only forced one save, as Berry was able to block several shots before they could get through to the goalkeeper. As a result, Oglethorpe won eight corners in the second half. In the end, though, the Petrels just couldn't get the ball past the Berry goalkeeper, and the homestanding Vikings emerged with the 1-0 win.
For the game, Oglethorpe outshot Berry, 9-8, and each team put three shots on goal. The Petrels took all eight corner kicks in the second half, while Berry accrued four for the game. Berry committed 11 fouls to Oglethorpe's six.
Sophomore goalkeeper Vaughn Moore made two saves on the afternoon. Senior Carlos Gaston fired two shots for the game, while junior midfielders Jason Sayers and Martijn Edelman, and sophomore midfielder Joe McGee, each put a shot on goal.
The 5-6-1 Petrels will again take the field next Saturday, when they welcome SAA foe Sewanee to Salamone Field. That game will kick off at approximately 4 p.m.
