Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team went ahead 1-0 early against home-standing Centre in a very chilly Danville, Ky., but they saw the Colonels come back with four unanswered goals to take the 5-1 victory in the final game of the regular season for both teams.
Oglethorpe got an early goal, taking a 1-0 lead in the game's 15th minute. Forward Joe McGee tallied his fourth goal of the season, picking up an assist on the play from midfielder Josh Hoeft. It was the first assist of Hoeft's career and was an excellent start for a team that featured several players deeper on the roster getting big minutes. Centre was able to equalize in the 31st minute, but the game was tied 1-1 at the halftime break. Oglethorpe was outshot 17-4 for the half, but they were able to bury their lone shot on goal for the period, taking full advantage of their opportunity. Meanwhile, Stormy Petrels' freshman goalkeeper Robert Goldin stopped five Colonel shots in the half, keeping his team fully in the game.
In the second half, Oglethorpe was able to create more offensive opportunities. They fired six shots for the period and put three of them on goal. Unfortunately, they were unable to put any of them in the net. Meanwhile, Centre was able to score four goals of their own to secure the victory. The Colonels took a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute and followed that up in the 69th with another. With a two-goal lead, Centre added two more in the final 10 minutes.
For the game, Goldin delivered an impressive performance despite the fact that his goal was under siege late. He recorded nine saves, the most by an Oglethorpe goalkeeper in a game this season. Centre outshot Oglethorpe 32-10 for the game, including 14-4 on goal. Centre took nine corner kicks to Oglethorpe's two.
The game was played in frigid conditions, with temperatures falling into the mid 30s by the game's end and the wind making it feel even colder.
Oglethorpe finishes the regular season 7-10-1, which includes a 2-5 mark in SAA play. That record gives the team the No. 7 seed in next weekend's SAA Men's Soccer Tournament in Conway, Ark. They'll begin tournament play on Friday evening, when they take on No. 2 seed Birmingham-Southern at 6 p.m. Eastern from the site of last season's SAA Championship triumph.
