Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead Wednesday afternoon and was within four goals late in the first half. They lost steam in the second half, however, and eventually fell to Huntingdon 20-4 in Montgomery, Ala.
The Stormy Petrels got off to a good start, pickup up a 1-0 lead just seconds into the game when midfielder Sydney Sparks tallied at the 29:41 mark of the first half. The home-standing Hawks ran off five goals in a row to take a four-goal lead, but junior Juliana Altman followed by scoring two of the next four goals, maintaining a four-goal deficit, 7-3, with 17:55 remaining in the half. That scoreline held for another 10 minutes, but Huntingdon finished the half with back-to-back tallies and took a 9-3 lead into the halftime break.
The second half was all Hawks. They rattled off nine straight goals to take an 18-3 lead with 6:21 remaining before Sparks scored her second with 5:10 left in the contest. Huntingdon finished the game off with two goals in the final three minutes.
Sparks' two goals came on four shots while Altman's came over the course of three shots. Sparks scooped four ground balls, as did attacker Michelle Vasques, who didn't find the scoreboard but did put seven of her eight shots on target. Goalie Paige Falkowski tallied 20 saves on the afternoon while facing 38 shots.
The Petrels were outshot 53-18, including 40-15 in shots on goal. Huntingdon scooped 35 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 29 and Oglethorpe turned the ball over 25 times to the Hawks' 13.
The 0-5 Petrels will next take the field when they return home on Sunday. They'll face off against Augustana (IL) on Oglethorpe Track and Field at 2 p.m.
