Men's Tennis Has Mixed Day at Southern Shootout

The Oglethorpe men's tennis team had a mixed day at the Southern Shootout Saturday, defeating Bridgewater (Va.), 5-4, but losing to Christopher Newport 8-1 in a match that was much closer than the score would indicate.

The Petrels fell behind after the doubles portion of the Bridgewater match Saturday morning, as the team of C.J. Antonio and Ben Hirsch provided the Petrels' only win, taking their match 8-1. However, the Petrels would pick up four wins in the singles portion, getting victories from No. 1 Antonio (6-2, 3-6, 6-2), No. 3 Hirsch (6-4, 4-6, 6-4), No. 4 Nick Roby (6-2, 6-1) and No. 6 Josh Rosenberg (7-5, 6-3). Three of the six singles matches went to a third set in this one.

However, after picking up that win, the Stormy Petrels were not so fortunate in the afternoon session against Christopher Newport. They lost 8-1, the only victory coming from No. 4 singles player Roby (6-3, 4-6, 10-8). However, the match was much closer than the score would indicate, with two of the Oglethorpe losses going to a third set, two 8-6 losses in doubles play, and a 6-4, 7-5 loss from No. 1 singles player Antonio.

The Petrels will look to bounce back from that loss tomorrow when they take on regionally-rated Methodist at 9 a.m. on the Howell Tennis Courts as the Southern Shootout continues.
