The Oglethorpe men's tennis team got their spring break trip off to a good start against Hobart Sunday in Orlando, Fla., defeating their opponents 5-4.
The Stormy Petrels swept doubles to take an early 3-0 lead in the dual match. C.J. Antonio and Ben Hirsch won 8-3 at No. 1, while Nick Roby and Cedric Andre held up their end of the bargain at No. 2, 8-5. Raines Green and Craig Borne played very well at No. 3, defeating their opponents, 8-4.
In singles, the Petrels quickly moved to within a match of winning the dual match as Antonio smoked his No. 1 opponent 6-1, 6-3. At No. 3, Nick Roby won his first set 6-2, and then held on and won a second-set tiebreak to clinch the dual match, 5-0.
It was a good thing, too, as the Petrels proceeded to drop all four of the remaining matches left on the table. Hirsch and Matt Jones won the first set of their matches but then dropped the final two sets. The other two lost in straight sets.
The victory improves the Petrels to 3-4 on the season, however, and they'll now settle in for five dual matches over the next three days. On Monday, they'll take on former SCAC rival Colorado College in the morning before coming back in the afternoon to play Hamilton, currently ranked 19th in the Northeast region.
