The Oglethorpe men's tennis team finished its spring break trip in the Orlando, Fla., area at 4-2 after Wednesday's results. They defeated Bethel (Minn.) 8-1 and lost to Babson 6-3 on Wednesday after beating Hamilton 6-3 and losing to Grinnell 5-4 on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the Stormy Petrels started with a difficult 5-4 loss to Grinnell in which they swept Nos. 1-4 singles, but lost all other matches, including all three doubles contests. The Petrels did get a 6-0, 6-4 victory from C.J. Antonio at No. 1, a 6-2, 6-1 win from Ben Hirsch at No. 2, a 6-2, 6-3 win from Nick Roby at No. 3 and a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 win from Kirk Zhao at No. 4.
That afternoon, they defeated Hamilton, 6-3. They got only one of the three doubles matches, that won by Antonio and Roby, 8-5, at No. 1. However, they came back to take five of the six singles matches to take the dual match. Antonio blasted his opponent 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1, Hirsch did likewise 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2, and Roby took care of business 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3. Raines Green and Caleb Cyprian came in and performed well at Nos. 5 and 6, as well. Green won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 while Cyprian took down the No. 6 match 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.
On Wednesday, the Petrels got started in the morning with an 8-1 victory over Bethel. The Petrels were dominant, getting a sweep in doubles from Roby/Antonio, Hirsch/Cedric Andre and Zhao/Matt Jones. They then took five of the six singles matches, getting victories from Antonio, Hirsch, Roby, Andre and Cyprian. Andre's was the only match that went to a third set.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Petrels ran out of gas, however. They took a 2-1 lead against Babson after the doubles competition, with Roby/Antonio and Hirsch/Andre picking up a pair of 8-6 wins. However, the Petrels could manage only one win in the singles portion of the evening, that coming from Zhao at No. 4, 7-5, 6-4.
After the week, the Petrels' record currently stands at 6-6. They'll now return home to take on Middlebury at the Howell Tennis Courts on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
