Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team picked up Friday evening where it left off last year, shutting out Huntingdon, 3-0, in their opening game of the Jim 'n Nick's/PUMA Labor Day Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
The Stormy Petrels got a three-point performance from senior midfielder Eyal Schechter, who scored a goal and tallied an assist in the win. Junior midfielder Nick Muntean and freshman midfielder Joe McGee netted the other two goals while sophomore midfielder Gustavo Martinez picked up an assist.
Schechter got the Petrels off to a flying start, scoring his goal off Martinez's assist in the 14th minute. It was the only goal of the half, but the Petrels put the game away right after the second-half restart. McGee scored off of Schechter's assist in the 49th minute and, just over a minute later, Muntean buried his shot in the 50th, more or less putting the game on ice for Oglethorpe.
The Petrels dominated the game from the outset, outshooting the Hawks, 25-4. They could put only five on goal to Huntingdon's two, but it was more than enough, as they scored on three of the five. They won eight corner kicks to Huntingdon's three.
Freshman goalkeeper Robert Goldin had a fairly quiet evening in his first career start, but he saved both shots on goal he faced, earning the win in the process.
It gets tougher for the Petrels on Sunday, as they take on Texas-Dallas, a team that received votes in the preseason coaches' poll, at 1 p.m. Eastern from Birmingham in the Labor Day Classic finale for both teams.
