Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team finished a long season-opening stretch without a home game with a 1-1 tie at Covenant in Lookout Mountain, Ga., Tuesday evening, moving their record to 4-3-1 on the season.
The first half was a scoreless affair, with sophomore goalkeeper Vaughn Moore making several key saves to keep the game a scoreless tie. In the second half, the Petrels started to come into their own, firing 10 shots at the Scots goal. The breakthrough came in the 70th minute when junior midfielder Nick Muntean scored a brilliant goal off a free kick from well outside the box.
Unfortunately, the Stormy Petrels were unable to put Covenant away, and in the 86th minute, the homestanding Scots equalized on a header in front of goal. With the score 1-1, the Petrels dominated the run-of-play in extra time, firing six shots in the second period, but were never able to snatch the game-winner.
Over the course of the contest, the Petrels outshot Covenant, 18-15, including 9-7 on goal. The two teams both took six corner kicks.
Muntean's goal was his second of the season after coming back from an injury that took half his season in 2013. Over the course of the game, he fired 10 shots and put five of them on target. Meanwhile, sophomore midfielder Seth Prieto took three shots and put one of them on goal. Moore had a very solid effort, making six saves on the evening.
At 4-3-1, the Petrels will finally play their home opener Saturday at noon against Elmhurst. Of the eight games the Petrels have played, three of them have been road contests and five have been at neutral sites.
