Men's Soccer Defeats Piedmont, 2-1, with Big Second-Half Comeback

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team used a big second-half comeback to defeat Piedmont, 2-1, Wednesday on Salamone Field in a game which they dominated from a run-of-play standpoint.

The Stormy Petrels outshot the visiting Lions 24-9, including 7-3 in shots on goal, and took nine corner kicks to Piedmont's one, but fell behind in the game's 23rd minute and couldn't put the ball in the net over the course of the first half, where they outshot Piedmont 11-4. Behind 1-0 at halftime, the Stormy Petrels attacked in waves in the second half. They had a couple of shots go just wide and another one hit the crossbar early in the second, but Piedmont still maintained the 1-0 advantage into the game's 60th minute.

With a half-hour to go, the Petrels' persistence finally paid off, as junior midfielder Angel Salome took a pinpoint cross from fellow junior midfielder Nick Muntean and hammered it past the Piedmont goalkeeper to tie the game, 1-1. It was Salome's second goal of the season and Muntean's second assist.

The Petrels continued to attack the Lion goal in search of a winner. They outshot the Lions 13-5 in the second half and took six corner kicks to Piedmont's none. They finally broke through in the 73rd minute, as Muntean sent a cross in from the left after dribbling in from a short corner kick. The ball deflected off a Piedmont defender and was sitting on the goal line for sophomore defender Coleman Parks to hammer into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

It was Muntean's second assist of the game and his third of the season, and he was all over the field over the course of the game, firing six shots and putting three on goal, in addition to his pair of assists. Salome had an excellent game coming off the bench, as he fired six shots, as well.

After the second Oglethorpe goal, Piedmont attempted to get back into the game and nab an equalizer, but the Petrels were able to shut them off at the pass and preserve the victory.

The win improves the Petrels to 5-4-1 on the season. They'll now take the weekend off before getting back to action next Wednesday at crosstown rival Emory. That game will kickoff at 7 p.m.
