Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team picked up an important road win over South Atlantic regional opponent Lynchburg Saturday afternoon, defeating the home-standing Hornets, 2-1, as part of the Shellenberger Memorial Classic in Lynchburg, Va.
The Stormy Petrels picked up the all-important opening goal in a fairly even game, getting the opening tally from freshman forward Joe McGee in the 33rd minute. Freshman midfielder Angel Salome started a breakaway off a Lynchburg turnover, then sent a pass through to McGee, who finished his chance for the 1-0 lead. That scoreline held at halftime, as well.
In the second half, the Petrels took control of the game in the 51st minute when freshman midfielder Hanno Antoni buried a long-range effort into the back of the net for the first goal of his career. The effort gave the team a 2-0 lead early in the second half. The Hornets got one back in the 68th minute, setting up a frantic final 20 minutes for the Petrel defense and sophomore goalkeeper Vaughn Moore. However, Moore was able to record three big saves down the stretch to secure an Oglethorpe victory.
The Petrels outshot the Hornets, 16-12, but Lynchburg actually put more shots on goal than did the Petrels, 8-6. McGee took four shots, putting two on goal, while junior midfielder Nick Muntean fired three shots and senior midfielder Eyal Schechter put one of his two shots on goal.
Lynchburg took seven corner kicks to Oglethorpe's one and forced Moore to make seven saves on the evening. Moore played well in his first game of the year, recovering from an injury that kept him out of last weekend's action.
The 2-1 Petrels continue their stay in Lynchburg tomorrow, as they'll conclude their Shellenberger Memorial Classic schedule against Roanoke, another regional opponent, starting at 1:30 p.m.
