Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Roanoke Sunday afternoon at the Shellenberger Memorial Classic in Lynchburg, Va. The Stormy Petrels finish the event with a 1-1 record and now are 2-2 on the season.
The Petrels were outshot in the first half, 9-4, and Roanoke cashed in on that advantage by taking the lead in the 32nd minute. The Petrels were able to create more chances in the second half, firing eight shots and matching Roanoke's total for the period. However, of their 12 total shots, they were only able to put one on goal. Meanwhile, Roanoke fired 17 shots and put seven of them on frame.
The Maroons took complete control of the game in the 51st minute when they added their second goal. They cruised from there for the 2-0 win, finishing 2-0 for the weekend and taking the Shellenberger Classic title.
The Petrels joined Greensboro with a 1-1 mark on the weekend while hosts Lynchburg finished 0-2. As it turns out, Oglethorpe will play Greensboro next Sunday at the BSC Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
Sophomore goalkeeper Vaughn Moore recorded five saves on the afternoon and drops to 1-1 on the season. The Petrels did hold an advantage in corner kicks, taking six to the Maroons' three.
The 2-2 Stormy Petrels will get right back on the field on Wednesday, when they travel up to Tennessee to take on Maryville at 7:30 p.m. In addition to Greensboro, they'll take on Hanover at the BSC Invitational next weekend.
