The Oglethorpe women's tennis team closed out its fall season in style Saturday with 9-0 sweep of Brooklyn on the Downing Howell Courts. The Stormy Petrels finish their fall season 2-0 as a result.
After an hour-long rain delay at the outset, the Petrels got off to an excellent start in the doubles competition, as all three Petrel doubles pairings secured victory. The No. 1 team of sophomore Caroline Johnson and senior Katherine Walker took their match 8-1, the No. 2 pairing of sophomore Halley Sickling and junior Ingrid Wilcox took theirs 8-1, and the No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Shannon Cruz and Delaney Abood took down their match 8-0.
With a 3-0 advantage heading into the singles competition, the Petrels looked to easily close out the match. They did so with three 6-0, 6-0 victories, coming from Walker, Cruz and freshman Madison Johnson. Sickling took down her opponent 6-1, 6-0 and Abood won her match at No. 5 by the score of 6-0, 6-2.
The match of the day involved Johnson, who won in straight sets but had a difficult matchup with Brooklyn No. 1 Ievgenilia Kostenko. The two went back and forth with Johnson up 5-4 in the second but losing the serve. After falling behind 6-5, Johnson broke back to force the tiebreak, then clinched the victory, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
"This was a great way to end our fall season," said Head Coach Peter Howell. "Our girls responded very well to playing an unknown opponent. They stayed focused and took care of business today. Caroline Johnson played a great match, as did the rest of our group. It's good to be 2-0!"
The Oglethorpe women's tennis team will now go into their winter break. They'll return in February as they look to move up the SAA standings over the course of the spring.
