Men's Soccer Trounces Sewanee, 6-1

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team picked up a comprehensive victory Saturday afternoon in Tennessee, blowing out homestanding Sewanee 6-1 to improve to 7-2-1 on the season, 2-0 in SAA play. The Stormy Petrels picked up five first-half goals and each of the six overall goals was scored by a different player.

The Petrels got off to a very fast start, jumping ahead in the fifth-minute on a goal from junior midfielder Gustavo Martinez, his first of the season. They quickly doubled the advantage when senior midfielder Martijn Edelman found the back of the net in the sixth minute off an assist from Martinez. With a 2-0 lead, the Petrels continued to push forward for more. They outshot the Tigers 18-5 over the course of the first half, putting 11 shots on target and winning four corner kicks.

The Petrels pushed their lead to three in the 15th minute, as senior midfielder Nick Muntean buried one in the back of the net for his eighth goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Erik Marquez got in on the fun in the 20th minute, making the score 4-0. Sewanee got a goal back in the 23rd, but freshman midfielder Topher Marshall tallied the first goal of his Oglethorpe career in the 33rd minute, giving the Petrels a commanding 5-1 halftime advantage.

The visitors pretty much cruised in the second half, holding onto their four-goal advantage. They still outshot the Tigers 5-1 over the course of the period, though. They added another goal, too, as sophomore midfielder Devon Patterson knocked home the first goal of his Petrel career in the 77th minute.

Overall, the Petrels outshot the Tigers 23-6, including 12-4 on goal. Senior goalkeeper Vaughn Moore picked up another victory, recording two saves over 84 minutes of play in the process. Muntean fired five total shots and put three on goal. He currently holds the conference lead in both goals (8) and total shots (40).

The Petrels will return home next weekend as SAA play continues in earnest. They'll take on Birmingham-Southern Friday night at the Oglethorpe Track and Field with the game scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Then, they'll welcome Millsaps to Salamone Field Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
