The Oglethorpe men's tennis team beat SAA opponent Millsaps on the Downing Howell Courts Sunday to improve to 6-6 on the season. The 6-3 victory also moves the Stormy Petrels to 2-1 in SAA play and vaults them into second place in the league after three matches.
The team had a very successful day from the doubles matches, sweeping the Majors to go up 3-0 heading into singles. The regionally-ranked combo of junior C.J. Antonio and senior Ben Hirsch won 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles spot while freshman Briton Richardson and senior Craig Borne defeated the Millsaps No. 2 doubles team 9-8 (7-5), which turned out to be a big swing match for the Petrels. The No. 3 doubles team of freshman Judd Motz and senior Josh Rosenberg won 8-4 to complete the sweep.
The Petrels battled in the singles matches, finishing the day splitting the six singles contests with Millsaps to give Oglethorpe the 6-3 victory. Regionally-ranked Antonio collected another win, beating Major No. 1 Charles Rees in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Motz won in the No. 4 spot, defeating his opponent 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 10-2, really turning it on in the super-tiebreak. Richardson continued his strong play in the No. 5 spot, beating Emerson Brundick 6-4, 0-6, 6-1. Millsaps picked up three match wins of ther own as Oglethorpe No. 2 Kirk Zhao fell 6-2, 6-3 to Diego Marti Vertiz. Ben Hirsch played in the No. 3 spot and fell to Alex Centurion 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), while sophomore Jimmy Nuckolls was defeated by Millsaps No. 6 Sean Solomonoff 6-3, 6-2.
Head Coach Peter Howell discussed the team's win: "Again we got a huge lift in the doubles with Richardson and Borne winning that third match in a tiebreaker. This was a tight college match and closer than the final 6-3 score. It's great to have picked up two conference wins this weekend."
The team's next match will be against Piedmont on Tuesday at the Downing Howell Courts. The match will get started at 3:30 p.m.
