Women's Tennis Loses Hard-Fought Battle with No. 39 Coe, 6-3

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team started its spring break off on a positive foot even in defeat, as they battled hard and played well against No. 39 Coe before eventually falling, 6-3, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Petrels got very competitive matches in all three doubles slots, taking one of them and entering the singles portion behind just 2-1. The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Caroline Johnson and junior Katherine Walker upset Coe's No. 1 doubles team, 8-6. Meanwhile, the No. 2 team of juniors Marcail McGranahan and MaryAnne Hafen were giving their Coe opponents a handful, eventually falling 8-6. The No. 3 team of sophomore Ingrid Wilcox and freshman Halley Sickling played well in an 8-4 defeat at No. 3.

In the singles portion, Johnson continued her excellent play, besting a regionally-ranked opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Hafen also picked up a victory at No. 5, defeating her opponent comfortably, 6-1, 6-2. Walker competed well at No. 2 before falling, 6-2, 6-3, while McGranahan won three games in the second set, falling 6-0, 6-3 overall. Wilcox took a couple off of her opponent in the No. 4 slot in the second set, 6-0, 6-2, while Sickling fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

"The girls are fighting hard and competing with these very good teams," said Head Coach Peter Howell. "It was great for Katherine and Caroline to break through and close a tough match at No. 1 doubles. MaryAnne Hafen is a rock. She's consistent and unflappable, and showed it this afternoon. Things will not get easier as we face No. 40 UT-Tyler tomorrow; but we will be ready!"

The loss drops the Petrels to 2-5 on the season, but gives them a renewed sense of confidence headed into the rest of their spring break trip in Central Florida. They'll play two matches on Monday, starting the day at 8 a.m. with a match against another nationally-ranked foes, No. 40 Texas-Tyler, set to take place back at Sanlando Park. Tomorrow afternoon, they'll travel into Orlando, Fla., to the Orlando Tennis Center to take on Howard Payne at 5:30 p.m.
