Men's Tennis Downs Centre in Final SAA Regular Season Contest

The Oglethorpe men's tennis team defeated Centre 6-1 on Sunday in Danville, Ky., to win their final conference match of the regular season and end their SAA slate at 9-8 overall, 4-3 in conference play.

The doubles matches went very well for the Stormy Petrels,  who were trying to bounce back after a tough loss to No. 28 Sewanee on Saturday. Junior C.J. Antonio and senior Ben Hirsch beat Trey Williamson and Woody Lini 8-6 at No. 1 doubles to give the Petrels their first win in the match. Senior Craig Borne and junior Briton Richardson lost to the Centre No. 2 doubles team in a tough 8-5 match, but freshman Judd Motz and senior Josh Rosenberg won in the No. 3 spot 9-7. The wins in doubles gave the Petrels a 2-1 lead going into singles play.

The team then clinched the match in singles with impressive performances by several Oglethorpe players. Antonio continued his impressive season, collecting another win by defeating Williamson 6-1, 6-0. Motz won in the four spot, beating his opponent 6-2, 6-0. Richardson downed Alex Wermeling in his 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5 and sophomore Jimmy Nuckolls pulled out a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Kirk Zhao and Ben Hirsch's matches were left unfinished at No. 2 and 3.

Coach Peter Howell spoke about the match: "This was a good way to wrap up our conference schedule. I was worried we might suffer a post Sewanee letdown, and we started a little shaky in the doubles; however we were really focused during singles and played some very good tennis in winning four matches decisively."

The Petrels will now look to collect another win during their final match of the regular season against Oxford this Saturday. The team will battle it out on the Downing Howell Courts against Oxford at 10 a.m. and will celebrate Senior Day prior to the match.
