Men's Soccer Scores Three Second-Half Goals for Thrilling Comeback Win over Averett

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team stormed back with three goals in the second half Saturday on Day 2 of the Berry Invitational in Mount Berry, Georgia, coming back from a two-goal halftime deficit and stunning Averett in the process. Senior midfielder Martijn Edelman slotted home the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 90th minute, improving the Stormy Petrels to 3-2-1 on the young season.

The Petrels were down 2-0 at halftime despite outshooting the Cougars 14-5 over the course of the opening period, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. They needed a quick start to the second half and they got it. Senior goalkeeper Vaughn Moore picked up a big save early in the period and the Petrels immediately answered at the other end when senior midfielder Nick Muntean buried a shot into the back of the net to cut the Averett lead in half in the 53rd minute. It was Muntean's third goal of the season.

From there, it didn't take long for Oglethorpe to find the equalizer. In the 58th minute, sophomore midfielder Erik Marquez took a feed from sophomore midfielder Jonathan Guy and knocked the ball past Cougar goalkeeper Christian Hester to tie the score at 2-2.

From there, the Petrels laid siege to the Averett goal in search of the game-winner. They fired six shots on target at the Averett goal from the run of play from the 58th minute on, but Hester was able to save all six of them. The Petrels forced him to make 10 saves in all.

It looked as though the game would go into extra time, which would have marked the third time in six games for the Petrels this season. However, in the 90th minute, the Petrels won a penalty kick with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation time. Edelman stepped to the penalty spot and calmly slotted home the game-winning goal.

Amid the Petrels outshooting them and Hester making four first-half saves, the Cougars got off to a first-half lead with goals in the 30th and 40th minutes. The 2-0 disadvantage marked Oglethorpe's biggest deficit of the season, but they had erased it within the first 15 minutes of the second half.

Muntean and Marquez both put three shots on goal for the game, while Moore made three saves on the five shots on goal he faced. For the game, Oglethorpe outshot Averett 26-8, including 15-5 on goal. The Petrels also took nine corner kicks to Averett's three.

The Petrels will be in action next weekend when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama, for the BSC Invitational. They'll take on Brooklyn Friday night at 8:30 p.m. Eastern and Anderson (Indiana) Saturday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
