Women's Lacrosse Falls 15-8 to Hendrix on Senior Day

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team took part in a competitive, back-and-forth game Saturday morning at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, but the visiting Hendrix Warriors outscored them 9-2 in the second half and pulled away for a 15-8 victory on Senior Day at Oglethorpe, dropping the Stormy Petrels to 3-9 on the season overall, 0-4 in SAA play.

The first half saw the Petrels take early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 over the game's opening 10 minutes. Freshman attacker Caroline Chamberlain put a shot past the Hendrix goalie off an assist from junior midfielder Juliana Altman to open the scoring with 29:23 left, while freshman midfielder Cassie Andrews scored unassisted with 20:14 remaining to give Oglethorpe a 2-1 edge. The Warriors tallied four consecutive goals after that, putting themselves ahead 6-3 with 8:42 left in the period.

However, the Petrels responded in kind, scoring four consecutive goals of their own to tie the score 6-6 at halftime. Senior midfielder Juliana Altman scored the second one with 7:07 left in the half, while senior midfielder Tate Davis scored on a free position shot with 6:10 left and Altman scored again off an assist from Sparks with 4:44 left in the period.

In the second half, though, Hendrix opened the proceedings with nine consecutive goals, pulling out to a 15-6 lead with 3:34 remaining and putting the game away. The Petrels responded with a couple of late goals from Davis and Altman, but they got no closer than 15-8.

The Petrels got three goals from Altman and a pair from Davis. Altman put three of her four shots on goal while Davis put all four of her shots on cage. Altman added a game-high five ground balls, as well.

The Warriors outshot the Petrels 29-21, including 23-16 on goal. Turnovers proved fairly even, with Hendrix turning it over 26 times to Oglethorpe's 24. Hendrix outdrew the Petrels 15-10 while scooping 18 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 14. Hendrix converted on 4 of 8 free position shots to Oglethorpe's 1-of-5.

The Petrels celebrated Senior Day Saturday morning before the game, as they honored the careers of Davis, Sparks, defender Morgan McGhee, defender Caitlin Ayres and attacker Claire Stauber

"I'd like to thank our seniors for everything they've done for this program," said Oglethorpe head coach Marissa Giannerini. "I think the whole team wanted to win this game for them on their day, but unfortunately, it just wasn't to be. We've still got a few games left on our regular season schedule, so our focus is now on those games and finishing the season strong."

The Petrels will travel to LaGrange, Georgia, to take on LaGrange Wednesday at 6 p.m. before ending their regular season with back-to-back SAA games at Berry and Centre.
