The Oglethorpe women's tennis team faced a tough matchup Saturday morning against the No. 16 Sewanee Tigers, and the nationally-ranked side was able to come up with the victory in Sewanee, Tennessee, winning 9-0. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 8-4 on the season overall and 1-1 in SAA play.

The Tigers got all three victories in doubles, with a competitive match at No. 1, featuring junior Caroline Johnson and freshman Hannah Dattilo, that Sewanee was able to win 8-4. The Oglethorpe tandem was down just 5-4 at one point in the match. Sophomore Shannon Cruz and junior Halley Sickling fell 8-0 at No. 2, and freshman Taylor Cranford and senior Ingrid Wilcox lost 8-2 in the No. 3 match.

In singles competition, Johnson fought very hard against Sewanee's No. 1 player, forcing the match to a third-set super-tiebreak after winning the first set in emphatic fashion. She eventually fell 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6). Elsewhere, Dattilo fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2; Cranford lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3; Cruz dropped her No. 4 match, 6-3, 6-1; Wilcox fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5; and sophomore Delaney Abood went down in her No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-2.

"We played tough matches at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles, as well as across the board, against a very tough Sewanee team," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "The team fought hard and never quit against stronger players. This experience will definitely help us get ready for tomorrow's battle against Centre."

The Petrels will travel to Danville, Kentucky, Sunday morning to take on Centre, then will get set for another road trip next weekend, when they'll take on Rhodes and Hendrix.
