The Oglethorpe women's tennis team enjoyed an outstanding performance Saturday afternoon, as they went to Memphis, Tennessee, to face a regionally ranked Rhodes team and upended the homestanding Lynx 7-2. The result improved the Stormy Petrels to 9-5 on the season overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The dual match began with the Petrels taking down two of the three doubles matches. The No. 3 team of senior Ingrid Wilcox and junior Halley Sickling ran their counterparts off the court, 8-1. That was followed by Rhodes winning the No. 1 match from junior Caroline Johnson and freshman Hannah Dattilo, 8-6, but the No. 2 team of sophomore Shannon Cruz and freshman Taylor Cranford took an 8-6 decision of their own to make the score 2-1 headed into the singles portion of the competition. 

In singles, sophomore Delaney Abood got things started with a 6-0, 6-0 clean sweep of her opponent at No. 6, making it 3-1 on the day. Cranford continued the Oglethorpe hot streak, winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4, and Wilcox won 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the dual match for Oglethorpe, 5-1.

The Lynx picked up their last victory of the day in the No. 2 match against Dattilo, 6-3, 6-1, before the Petrels finished with two more wins: a 6-2, 6-4 triumph for Johnson at No. 1 and a 6-3, 6-4 victory from Cruz at No. 3.

"This was an important match for us today," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell, "and the team came through with a solid win. Anytime you can beat Rhodes, you've played well on the day. If we have the same solid play throughout the lineup, we have a great chance to take a win versus an improved Hendrix team tomorrow."

The Petrels will take on the Handrix Warriors in morning's SAA tilt. After that, they'll reutrn home to go against Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.
