Men's Soccer Extends SAA Unbeaten Streak in Dominating Fashion over Hendrix

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team extended their SAA unbeaten streak to 19 games, their SAA winning streak to 11 games, and their overall winning streak to seven games Friday night with a dominating 6-0 win over Hendrix at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in SAA play, bringing them to the brink of clinching their fourth straight SAA regular season title.

The Petrels got a big lead early and never looked back on Friday night, which served as Senior Night for the program. Topher Marshall, Devon Patterson, Jon Guy, Adam Sole, Rob Bonet, Ekow Annan and Jake Sayer were honored for their careers prior to the game, and all of them featured in the contest, many of them prominently. Patterson scored a pair of goals, Sole had a goal and an assist, Marshall had two assists, and Bonet tallied a goal.

Patterson got the scoring started for the Petrels with back-to-back goals in the opening half-hour. In the 15th minute, he took a Marshall corner kick and flicked a header past the Hendrix goalkeeper and into the side of the net on the far post. Then in the 28th minute, Hendrix goalkeeper Josh Neuman was able to save a point-blank shot from junior midfielder Andrew Grodhaus, but Patterson was there to tap in the rebound and make it 2-0.

The home side extended their advantage even further at the 35-minute mark, as Marshall sent a beautiful cross to the back post. It found the head of Sole, who easily directed it into the net to give the Petrels a 3-0 lead.

The onslaught continued in the second half. Junior forward Gabriel Alvarez started the second-half scoring with an outstanding free kick from 20 yards out, making it 4-0 in the 63rd minute. Then, freshman forward Tuli Mwarumba picked up his first career goal off of a rebound. The initial shot came from Sole, but Neuman saved it right into the path of Mwarumba, who knocked it home in the 65th minute. Finally, Bonet netted his first career goal when he buried a penalty kick past backup Hendrix goalkeeper Aaron Sahlmann in the 73rd minute.

The Petrels outshot the Warriors 38-2 in all over the course of the game, including a blistering 22-1 mark in shots on goal. Oglethorpe also took 18 corner kicks to Hendrix's one.

Oglethorpe maintained first place in the SAA with the victory. They hold a three-point lead over second-place Rhodes, who they'll play in their final regular-season home game Sunday at 2:30 p.m. With a win, the Petrels would clinch their fourth consecutive outright SAA regular season title.
