Women's Tennis Defeats Berry in SAA Opener

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team won their SAA opener Saturday morning by defeating the Berry Vikings, 8-1, on the Howell Courts. It was the team's third consecutive win and takes their record to 5-4 on the season, and 1-0 in SAA play.

They swept doubles play, with senior Caroline Johnson and sophomore Hannah Datillo picking up an 8-4 win in the No. 1 slot. Juniors Shannon Cruz and Charlotte Disley won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and at No. 3, the tandem of senior Halley Sickling and freshman Elizabeth Bielicki earned an 8-6 win.

In singles play, Johnson picked up a hard fought 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3) win at No. 1. Datillo won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. At No. 3 singles, Cruz cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Freshman Lisette Phillips won at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 7-5. Bielicki earned a tough 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to round out the scoring.

Head Coach Peter Howell commented after the match, "The girls did a great job today. The match was a lot closer than the final score, as we took all of the close matches. Hannah Datillo played her best match of the year, and Shannon Cruz has been solid all season. Our depth showed as Phillips and Bielicki took No. 5 and No. 6 singles."

The Petrels will be off until next weekend, when they will host SAA foes Hendrix and Rhodes on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
