Men's Soccer Routs Brevard, 6-0

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team earned a dominant victory over Brevard Monday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, defeating them 6-0 to improve to 3-2 on the season. The Stormy Petrels scored three goals in each half and put the game away early against the visiting Tornados.

The Petrels took a 3-0 lead in a 90-second stretch early in the first half. In the 20th minute, senior midfielder Topher Marshall took a corner kick that was headed down by junior forward Gabriel Alvarez into the path of senior forward Devon Patterson. Patterson hammered it into the back of the net to give Oglethorpe a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, junior midfielder Andrew Grodhaus played Alvarez through down the right flank and Alvarez launched an inch-perfect cross to the head of a diving Patterson. Patterson redirected the ball into the back of the net to give the home side a 2-0 advantage. Twenty seconds after that, Marshall fired a shot from the top of the box that was cleared off the line by a Brevard defender. The ball bounced back to the top of the box for junior midfielder Josh Bronstorph, who fired a shot past the Tornado goalkeeper to give Oglethorpe a 3-0 lead.

A similar scoring flurry erupted in the second half, when the Petrels earned two more goals in 30 seconds in the 57th minute. Sophomore defender Chris Welsh got onto the end of a low cross from sophomore midfielder Alexandre Pfister and directed it into the goal for a 4-0 lead, then junior forward Matt Ward received a pass from sophomore forward Gilberto Ramos at the top of the box and blasted it home for a 5-0 lead.

The Petrels capped off their afternoon in the 88th minute, when freshman midfielder Ian Flores saw a ball deflect to him off a Brevard defender at the top of the box. He slammed it home for the final Oglethorpe tally, giving them a 6-0 lead.

For the game, Oglethorpe outshot Brevard 35-2, including a 20-0 mark in shots on goal. In addition, they took 4 corner kicks to none for the Tornados.

Junior goalkeeper Scott Zoino earned his second consecutive shutout on the day.

The Petrels will be back in action Saturday at noon, when they'll take on Sewanee in their SAA home opener at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. After that, they'll hit the road to take on Washington (Missouri) in a neutral-site game on Monday, followed by an SAA road trip to Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.
