Women's tennis blanks Covenant to improve to 2-0

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team continued their hot start to the season Saturday at the Howell Courts, blanking their opponent for the second straight day. They defeated the Covenant Scots 9-0 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Hannah Dattilo and senior Shannon Cruz won their match 8-2, as did the No. 3 pairing of senior Delaney Abood and sophomore Lisette Phillips. The No. 2 duo of senior Charlotte Disley and sophomore Elizabeth Bielicki won their battle 8-1.

In the singles competition, Dattilo won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1; Cruz won 12 straight games at No. 2; Disley had a battle at No. 3, but prevailed 6-3, 7-5; Abood took care of business 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4; Bielicki won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5; and Phillips blanked her opponent at No. 6.

"It's nice to start the year 2-0," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "We got a great start in doubles, especially from Disley and Bielicki. Dattilo played her best match of the year so far, the lineup stayed focused, and each player responded very well in singles."

The Petrels will now take a lengthy break and are not scheduled to get back to action until their spring break trip, beginning Monday, March 11.
