Women's lacrosse falls to Rhodes at OU Track and Field

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team suffered a tough afternoon Saturday at the Oglethorpe Track and Field against a Rhodes team that came in undefeated in SAA play. The Stormy Petrels gave up 13 goals in each period and were unable to answer back in a 26-3 defeat. The result dropped the home side to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

The visiting Lynx jumped on the Petrels early, scoring eight goals over the opening 17 minutes of play. Oglethorpe got an answer at the 12:04 mark of the first half, when senior attacker Clarissa Hopkins took a feed from freshman midfielder Tatyana Harris and put it past the Rhodes goalie. That made the score 8-1. Hopkins followed with a goal off a free position shot about a minute later, making it 9-2 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the opening half. However, the Lynx finished the period with four straight goals to take a 13-2 lead into the halftime break.

They continued their high level of play in the second half, scoring the next nine goals in a row to put it away. Oglethorpe senior attacker Madison Goss scored an impressive goal, spinning in from behind the net and putting a shot past the Rhodes goalie, to give the Petrels their third with 12:06 left in the contest. That was all the home side would get, though, as Rhodes cruised to a 23-goal victory.

Hopkins led the team with her pair of goals, while junior defender Dreshona Mapps-Whitmore collected six ground balls on the afternoon. Junior goalie Jordan Chandler stopped 16 Lynx shots.

Rhodes outdrew the Petrels 26-5 and outshot them 52-7, including a 42-6 mark in shots on target. Rhodes succeeded on 12 of 13 clear attempts while Oglethorpe did so on just 8 of 22.

The Petrels return to action Sunday at 5 p.m. for their Senior Day contest, an exhibition against the Georgia Tech club team. After that, they'll close out their regular season with a trip to Berry Tuesday at 5 p.m.
