The Oglethorpe women's tennis team faced a difficult matchup Saturday, taking on a regionally-ranked Centre team in Danville, Kentucky. The homestanding Colonels prevailed 9-0 in the end, dropping the Stormy Petrels to 7-4 overall and 0-3 in SAA play.
The top-line doubles team of senior Shannon Cruz and sophomore Lisette Phillips fought hard, taking a 4-0 lead early in their match. The Colonel pair responded by winning the next eight games to take the match 8-4. Senior Charlotte Disley and junior Elizabeth Bielicki fought to a tiebreak in their match, but Centre came away with the 7-3 win in the extra stanza.
The Colonels were just too strong in singles. The Colonels clinched the match at No. 3, defeating senior Delaney Abood 6-1, 6-0. They continued with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Disley at No. 2, a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Phillips at No. 5, and a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Bielicki at No. 4.
The Petrels continue their SAA road trip when they head to Tennessee to take on No. 26 Sewanee Sunday at 11 a.m. Eastern time.
