Men's soccer falls to No. 23 Washington and Lee, 2-1

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team scored an early goal Sunday against the No. 23 Washington and Lee Generals in Lexington, Virginia, but the home side answered with two goals, including one in the 90th minute, to upend the Stormy Petrels and drop them to 4-2 on the season.

The Petrels got off to an excellent start when sophomore midfielder Affonso Temporal took a feed from junior forward Gilberto Ramos and put it past Washington and Lee goalkeeper Michael Nyc to give his team a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. However, the Generals responded minutes later, evening the score in the 20th. The Petrels outshot the Generals 8-6 over the opening 45 minutes, but the two teams went into the halftime break deadlocked.

The second half played out in much the same fashion, with neither team seemingly able to grab the lead. Washington and Lee outshot the Petrels 13-7 over the period, though, and finally broke through with less than a minute remaining until the end of regulation. Washington and Lee won a free kick just to the left of the Oglethorpe penalty area. The cross into the center of the box found the head of the Generals' Oliver Dolberg and he put it past Oglethorpe senior goalkeeper Scott Zoino for the win.

The Petrels will now head home to take on Anderson (Indiana) from the Oglethorpe Track and Field Friday at 7 p.m. After that, they'll host Roanoke Sunday at 1 p.m.
