The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fell to 1-1 on the season Sunday afternoon with a 20-3 defeat at the hands of the Sewanee Tigers in Tennessee in the SAA opener for both teams. The home side scored eight goals over the opening 20 minutes before the Petrels were able to respond, and Oglethorpe was never able to work their way back into the game.

The Petrels scored a couple goals in the first half, getting a marker from sophomore midfielder Samanda Cox at the 8:51 mark and from freshman attacker Mikaela Carlsen with just under 8 minutes on the clock. They trailed 12-2 at the end of the first half, though, and only managed a single goal in the second half. That tally came from freshman midfielder Kendall White off an assist from senior attacker Jill Czaplinski with 30 seconds remaining.

Senior goalie Jordan Chandler got the start and recorded 15 saves on 30 shots faced, but suffered the loss. Senior defender Dreshona Mapps-Whitmore and sophomore midfielder Jalina Rodriguez grabbed three ground balls each, while White secured five draw controls.

The Tigers outshot Oglethorpe 37-7 on goal and forced 39 Petrel turnovers. They also went 6-for-11 on free position shots for the game while Oglethorpe posted a 2-for-3 mark.

The Petrels will be back in action Wednesday evening when they host in-state opponent Piedmont at the Oglethorpe Track and Field at 5 p.m.
