Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team led from beginning to end in an 11-3 rout of the homestanding Huntingdon Hawks Saturday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 2-2 on the season.
In a low-scoring first half, the Petrels tallied three of the four goals to take a 3-1 lead into the halftime break. Freshman attacker Mikaela Carlsen and senior attacker Jill Czaplinski both scored in the opening 2:10 of the game, then after the Hawks cut the Oglethorpe lead in half with 7:20 left in the period, freshman attacker Sissy De Armas tallied a goal with just a second left until halftime off an assist from sophomore midfielder Tatyana Harris to make it 3-1 at the break.
Oglethorpe went on a big scoring run to start the second half, scoring six straight over the opening 21 minutes of the second half and extending their lead to a commanding 9-1 with nine minutes to go in the game. Huntingdon got a couple goals back to make it 9-3 with 3:40 remaining, but the Petrels closed it out with a couple of their own over the game's final minute.
Czaplinski tallied a game-high five goals, including four during the six-goal stretch early in the second half, putting eight of her nine total shots on target. Freshman midfielder Kendall White added a pair of goals. Senior goalie Jordan Chandler totaled nine saves on the afternoon.
The Petrels forced 30 Huntingdon turnovers and scooped 23 ground balls. The Petrels went 2-for-6 on free position shots and outshot the Hawks 17-12 on goal.
Oglethorpe will be back in action on Feb. 29 when they take on Hendrix at noon from the Oglethorpe Track and Field in an SAA showdown.
