Women's lacrosse notches first SAA victory of season

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team defeated the Hendrix Warriors 13-10 Saturday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, scoring their first SAA win of the season and improving to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Stormy Petrels jumped out to a 7-1 lead over the opening 20 minutes and then held on as Hendrix came back to within a couple goals in the second half, holding on for the 3-goal win.

Senior attacker Jill Czaplinski led the Petrels with 6 goals on the afternoon, putting eight of her 10 shots on target and scooping three ground balls. Freshman midfielder Kendall White scored 4 goals while securing a game-high six draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Tatyana Harris led the Petrels with three caused turnovers and added four draw controls. 

After Hendrix scored the opening goal, the Petrels answered with seven straight tallies of their own. Czaplinski scored on three of them, one of which came on a free position shot, while White and sophomore attacker Grace Collier added markers, as well, the latter off an assist from freshman attacker Mikaela Carlsen. Sophomore midfielder Tatyana Harris ended the run by scoring with the Petrels down a player at the 11:30 mark, making it 7-1. The Warriors scored three in a row from there, but Czaplinski added another with 39 seconds remaining until halftime.

The Warriors began the second half by cutting Oglethorpe's lead to just two, scoring a pair of goals over the opening 2 minutes of the second half. The Petrels came back with 4 straight goals from Czaplinski and White, with sophomore midfielder Samanda Cox nabbing an assist on one of them, to push their lead out to 12-6 with just under 22 minutes remaining. The Warriors cut it back to a 3-goal game with 5 minutes left, but the Petrels held them off from there. 

The Petrels outdrew Hendrix 15-10 on the afternoon and scored on four of their seven free position shots. Oglethorpe collected 27 ground balls and forced 29 Hendrix turnovers.

Oglethorpe will be back in action Tuesday afternoon, when they host JWU-Denver at noon from the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
