The Oglethorpe men's tennis team earned its second victory of the season Sunday, besting North Central (Illinois) 6-3 to start their spring break trip in Orlando, Florida, on the right foot. The Stormy Petrels knocked off the Cardinals with outstanding play all the way around, winning two of three doubles matches and four of six singles contests.
The top-line men's tandem of juniors Walker Benson and Calvin Schneider held down the fort with an 8-3 win over their opponent, while the No. 3 doubles team of junior Elijah Bullock and freshman Walker Towns won their match 8-5 to give Oglethorpe a 2-1 lead headed into the singles competition.
In singles, senior Zoe Raymond started things off with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5, giving the Petrels three of the five victories they would need. Towns lost at No. 2, though, making it 3-2. The other four singles matches went to a third-set super-tiebreak, though, and Oglethorpe won three of them. Benson took down his opponent 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) in a tight one at No. 1. Schneider took out his opponent 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 3 and Bullock did the same 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) at No. 6.
The Petrels improved to 2-1 on the season and continue their spring break trip with matches against John Carroll Monday at 8 a.m. and Wartburg later in the day at 6:30 p.m.
