Box Score ATLANTA—Matthews Braga scored in the 17th minute, and the Oglethorpe men's soccer team won the Southern Athletic Association for the ninth time in the last 10 years with a double-overtime draw against Birmingham Southern on Sunday.
The Stormy Petrels remained the only unbeaten team in the conference and improved to 5-0-1 in league play. Their scoring margin moved to 19-2.
Braga's goal was his third of the season, all of which have come in the last four games, and gave the Petrels a 1-0 lead they would carry into the final minutes. It was not until the 87th minute that Birmingham Southern evened the game up at 1-1.
Despite the late goal, Oglethorpe dominated the match and earned an advantage of 19-10 on the shot tally. Logan Llano accounted for four of those while Ian Farquhar accounted for three. Ethan Harrison tallied six saves.
Oglethorpe had a couple of its best opportunities still to come away victorious in the overtime periods, but a pair of great saves by BSC goalkeeper Jack Hunt kept the game even. One of those came on a shot by Fernando Guevara early in the first OT.
Up next, Oglethorpe hosts Berry Saturday at 7:30 p.m. following the women's game. The SAA tournament is set to begin Saturday, Oct. 30, and continue through Friday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 7.
