Box Score ATLANTA—Ian Farquhar broke a 1-1 tie with a spectacular goal in the 106th minute, and Oglethorpe advanced to the championship match of the Southern Athletic Association tournament Friday night with a 2-1 win over Birmingham Southern.
The goal came on a long blast in the second overtime, less than five minutes before a penalty-kick shootout would have ensued, and helped the Stormy Petrels stay undefeated in their last nine games. Fernando Guevara was credited the assist.
The goal concluded one of the most exciting games of the season as Oglethorpe and Birmingham Southern remained scoreless through 59 minutes until a penalty kick scored from Guevara broke the scoreless deadlock. It then took BSC only 23 seconds to tie the game back up as Coleman Jennings found the back of the net with an assist to Pirmin Blattmann. Both goals came in the 60th minute.
All the surrounding action featured plenty of excitement as well. The game saw 36 shots taken, including 14 on goal, plus 15 combined corner kicks and 11 combined saves. Oglethorpe goalkeeper Ethan Harrison came up with eight of his own.
Farquhar's goal was his team co-leading fifth goal of the season and third in just the last two games of the conference tournament. Guevara's goal was his fourth of the season, and the assist of the winner was his team leading seventh assist of the season.
Up next, Oglethorpe will face Centre Sunday at 1 p.m. ET back here on Oglethorpe's turf field. Centre, who won 4-0 in their semifinal match against Sewanee, lost to Oglethorpe 3-0 in the regular season. The match was both teams' conference opener back on Sept. 25.
