Petrels come up short in SAA championship match

Box Score

ATLANTA—Ian Farquhar and Ethan Harrison made the all-tournament team after the Oglethorpe men's soccer team lost the championship final of the Southern Athletic Association tournament Sunday afternoon. The second-seeded Colonels of Centre topped the top-seeded Stormy Petrels 3-0.

Oglethorpe previously beat Centre 3-0 in the teams' regular-season meeting, but the Colonels returned the favor in the tournament.

Max Gordinier broke open the scoring in just the seventh minute on a rebound from a missed shot my Michael Vogt in the box. It made it 1-0 and proved to be all the scoring Centre needed to take its third tournament tile in the last four years.

Centre led 2-0 at the break after a goal from Taylor Nelson, then scored a consolation goal in the 85th minute from Nathan Wilcox.

Oglethorpe had plenty of chances, outshooting Centre 14-10, but the Colonels earned three more shots on goal (6-3) which proved to be the difference. Logan Llano and Sebastian Molina accounted for three shots, both one on goal, and Stephen Summerow took two shots with one on goal. Harrison made three saves.

The loss marked only the third time the Petrels were shut out this season and first time since the final nonconference game of the season back in September.
