The Oglethorpe women's tennis team began their season Saturday morning with a 5-4 win at LaGrange, then saw their night match at Covenant suspended due to slick courts after a thick fog rolled in on Lookout Mountain. Regardless, the Stormy Petrels enjoyed a successful start to their season and enter SAA play at 1-0.

The Petrels got a pair of doubles wins to start the morning with a 2-1 lead. Sophomores Sydney Dattilo and Alyssa Merletti knocked off their opponent 8-6 in the topline match while seniors Lisette Phillips and Brooke Dotson scored an 8-2 in at No. 2. That meant the Petrels had to win three of their six singles matches, and they took those three off the board quickly. Merletti made short work of her opponent at No. 3, winning 6-1, 6-0; Dattilo followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2; and Phillips clinched the dual match at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph. Oglethorpe fell in three tiebreakers to turn the other three matches in LaGrange's favor, but it didn't matter for the final outcome. They held onto the 5-4 win in the dual match.

In the nightcap, Covenant led 3-1 at the time of suspension. They won two of the three doubles matches, although Phillips and Dotson earned an 8-5 victory at No. 2. The homestanding Scots were up a set and a break in a fourth match, and a fifth match was tight late in the first set. The dual match will go unfinished, though, leaving the Petrels at 1-0 on the season as they enter conference play next weekend.

They'll take on Centre Saturday and Sunday from the Howell Courts.
