Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team got their new season kicked off Saturday from Sewanee, Tennessee, in a non-conference matchup against the Sewanee Tigers. The Tigers came back with a late goal, despite being down a man, to tie the Stormy Petrels 1-1 after two periods of extra time.
Things seemed to be going the Petrels' way in the early-going. Sewanee's starting goalkeeper was red-carded in the 26th minutes, meaning the Tigers would be down to 10 men the remainder of the contest. Then, the Petrels got on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute when sophomore midfielder Fernando Guevara finished off of an assist by sophomore forward James Williams.
The Petrels went into the locker room up 1-0 and poured on the pressure in the second half, firing 11 shots at the Sewanee goal. However, the Tigers saved all five Petrel shots on target in the second half, staying in the game. That allowed them to tie the game in the 87th minute and send it to extra time. Neither team was able to grab a golden goal in the 20 extra minutes. Oglethorpe sophomore goalkeeper Ulises Rodriguez made a couple saves in the second extra period to preserve the draw, and he tallied six total saves on the night.
Oglethorpe outshot Sewanee 22-12 overall and 9-8 on goal.
The Petrels get conference play officially started next Saturday, when they host Centre at 3:30 p.m. from the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
