Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team earned the program's first win over the Piedmont Lions Tuesday night, blowing their in-state opponents out 18-7 in Demorest and improving to 2-1 on the season. The Stormy Petrels ran out to a 10-goal lead at halftime and led by as many as 12 in the second half en route to the 11-goal victory.
The visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the opening 2:30 of the contest, serving notice early on that they came to play. Sophomore midfielder Kendall White scored a pair of goals during the run, while freshman midfielder Kaitlynn Alford and freshman attacker Ally Moir each added goals of their own. Oglethorpe went on another run of eight goals in a row later in the half, giving themselves a 13-2 advantage with 2:54 remaining in the half. Moir scored three goals during the 16-minute run.
The Petrels continued to add to their lead in the second half scoring twice more in the first couple minutes of the second period. Moir earned a goal and assisted a goal by junior midfielder Jalina Rodriguez to give the Petrels a 15-3 lead. Oglethorpe held the homestanding Lions to just four goals over the course of the second half, playing excellent defense on top of their goal-scoring onslaught.
Moir finished with six goals and six ground balls, while Alford added five goals, six ground balls and an impressive 10 draw controls. White finished with four goals and four draw controls of her own.
The Petrels helped facilitate their dominating performance by earning a bunch of extra possessions. They outdrew Piedmont 20-7 and scooped 24 ground balls while forcing 19 Lion turnovers. Oglethorpe also went 5-for-11 on free position shots and outshot their opponent 31-17 on goal.
Oglethorpe now heads into SAA play, starting with a trip to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Hendrix on Saturday, March 13.
