Men's soccer notches 1-0 win over Centre to open SAA play

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team started its SAA season Saturday at the Oglethorpe Track and Field where it left off the last one, using a first-half penalty kick to edge Centre 1-0 and improve to 1-0-1 on the season. It served as the Stormy Petrels' 28th consecutive victory in an SAA contest.

In a tight battle, the teams traded shots in the first half, with the Petrels out-tallying Centre 9-6 in that regard. However, it was a penalty that swung the momentum firmly in Oglethorpe's favor. The Petrels won a penalty kick in the 21st minute and sophomore midfielder Fernando Guevara finished it past the Centre goalkeeper to give the Petrels a 1-0 edge.

The home side held onto that advantage into the halftime break, then the tight battle continued into the second half. Both teams notched five shots in the second half, but Oglethorpe sophomore goalkeeper Ulises Rodriguez came up with a couple saves in the period and four total for the contest.

The Petrels forced Centre goalkeeper Haydon Korfhage into seven saves and outshot them 8-4 on goal. The Petrels outshot Centre 14-11 for the game.

The 1-0-1 Petrels will be back in action Friday at 3:30 p.m., when they welcome Rhodes to the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
