Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team extended their SAA winning streak to 29 games over multiple years with a tight 1-0 win over the visiting Rhodes Lynx Friday at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 2-0-1 on the season overall and 2-0 in SAA play.
The Petrels outshot Rhodes 4-2 in the first half, but both teams had the run of play for stretches during the opening half of play. Things changed late in the period, though, when Rhodes was forced to play with 10 men after Maxwell Hughes picked up a red card 40 seconds before halftime. The Petrels took advantage early in the second half with a goal from sophomore midfielder Ian Farquhar in the 52nd minute. Rhodes attempted to clear an Oglethorpe effort into the box, and got it as far as the top of the penalty area, but Farquhar was there to fire a shot past the Rhodes goalkeeper and give his team a 1-0 lead.
Oglethorpe continued to pour on the pressure, outshooting the Lynx 7-1 in the period, but Rhodes hung in and started to apply pressure to the Oglethorpe goal late in the contest. That pressure ratcheted up further when Oglethorpe junior forward Abraham Lopez was red-carded in the 88th minute, evening the teams at 10 men for the final couple minutes. However, the Petrels handled a Rhodes corner kick without incident and killed the game off with some possession at the other end.
The Petrels outshot Rhodes 11-3 overall, but the two teams were even with two shots on target apiece. Oglethorpe took six corner kicks to Rhodes' two.
Oglethorpe will be back in action Sunday afternoon, when they take on Hendrix at 1:30 p.m. in their final home contest of the regular season.
