Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team outscored Birmingham-Southern 14-4 in the second half Saturday afternoon en route to a 21-12 victory over the visiting Panthers, improving to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in SAA play on the season.
The Stormy Petrels proved exceptionally accurate with their shooting on the day and proved dominant off the draw. They put 33 of their 36 shots on goal and scored on 21 of those, and they went 8-for-13 on free position shots while outdrawing the Panthers 21-13. They used those advantages to turn a pretty even game on the stat sheet into a runaway nine-goal win. The Petrels outshot Birmingham-Southern 36-35, but the visitors forced 32 Oglethorpe turnovers while committing 29 and outscooped the home side 31-30 on ground balls. The Petrels were 24-for-33 on clear attempts to Birmingham-Southern's 19-for-27.
Oglethorpe also got a big boost from senior goalie Jordan Chandler, who made 16 saves on the 28 shots on goal she faced. That brought her to within three saves of 500 for her career. She also accrued three ground balls and caused three turnovers. Freshman attacker Ally Moir scored eight goals and passed out a couple of assists while putting 13 of her 14 shots on target. Freshman midfielder Kaitlynn Alford added five goals while putting all seven of her shots on target. Freshman midfielder Sydney Trammell collected 10 draw controls and five ground balls.
Birmingham-Southern built a 4-2 lead midway through the first half and opened a one-goal lead back up to two goals four times over the remainder of the period. The Petrels got it back down to a single goal, 8-7, with a Trammell goal off an assist from Moir at the 30-second mark. Alford then tied the game 8-8 on a free position shot 1:42 into the second half and Moir gave the Petrels the lead for good at the 24:08 mark. Oglethorpe pushed their lead up to 12-9 with 21:12 left, but the Panthers came back with two in a row to make it 12-11 with 18:44 left. Oglethorpe outscored the visitors 9-1 the rest of the way, though, pulling away for the win.
The Petrels will be back in action next Saturday for their home finale at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, when they take on Rhodes at noon.
