Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak in official SAA contests to 31 games, dating back to 2015, with a 5-2 win over the visiting Hendrix Warriors Sunday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 3-0 in SAA play and 3-0-1 on the season overall.
Despite going unbeaten in their first three games of the season, the Petrels scored just one goal in each of those contests. They quickly served notice that they'd be breaking that streak, though. Sophomore midfielder Ian Farquhar scored his second goal of the weekend off an excellent feed from junior midfielder Stephen Summerow in the sixth minute, then sophomore midfielder Fernando Guevara finished off a low ball sent to the back post by sophomore forward James Williams in the 24th minute, giving Oglethorpe a 2-0 advantage. They made it 3-0 just over a minute later when freshman forward Javier Aponte headed home another perfect cross from Summerow. They made it four in the 33rd minute when freshman midfielder Sebastian Molina scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Farquhar.
Hendrix got a goal late in the first half and pulled even closer in the 83rd minute when they made it 4-2. They put Oglethorpe under some late pressure and came close to pulling to within a goal in the 84th minute. However, the Petrels restored order in the 88th minute with a goal from freshman midfielder Felipe Araujo off an assist from freshman midfielder Adam Aliyu.
The Petrels outshot Hendrix 21-5 for the game overall and 11-3 on goal.
Oglethorpe will take on Berry Saturday at noon in a battle for first place in the SAA. Both teams will enter the matchup at 3-0 in conference play.
