The Oglethorpe men's tennis team fell behind 3-0 to the visiting Centre Colones after doubles Saturday morning, but then fought back to a 4-4 tie before dropping the final match and losing by a narrow 5-4 margin. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 1-1 on the season.
The Petrels got behind the eight-ball early, losing all three doubles matches to force themselves to win five of the six singles matches to win the dual match. The Petrels got to work clawing their way back, with freshman Vince Claussen getting things started with a 6-1, 6-4 victory out of the No. 3 slot. Senior Zoe Raymond won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 to draw the Petrels ever closer, 3-2. Then freshman Ameya Dani turned around a 6-0 first-set defeat with wins of 6-2 and 6-0 over the next two sets tying the score 3-3. Senior Walker Benson lost in a tight match at No. 1 to put the Colonels back ahead 4-3, though, forcing the Petrels to win the remaining two matches. In the No. 5 match, freshman Daniel Cohen lost the first set 6-1, but stormed back to win a second-set tiebreaker and then take the third 6-1, tying the score at 4-4 and putting the Petrels on the precipice of a major comeback win. Senior Calvin Schneider grabbed a 6-1 win in the first set at No. 4 and had a chance to win his match in the second, but fell in a tiebreaker to force a decisive third set. In the third, Schneider lost 6-3 to clinch a 5-4 victory for the Colonels.
The Petrels and Colonels will be back at it Sunday at 10 a.m. The second match of these weekend SAA series will serve as non-conference matches, with only the Saturday contests counting toward the SAA standings.
