Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team closed out the regular season on a positive note Sunday afternoon, defeating the homestanding Millsaps Majors 3-0 in Jackson, Mississippi, to go into the SAA tournament with a 4-1-2 overall record and a 4-1-1 mark in conference play. The Stormy Petrels finished tied for second in the league, but hold the No. 3 seed in next weekend's SAA tournament, and will take on No. 2 seed Berry from Birmingham, Alabama, in Friday's semifinals.
On Sunday, the Petrels took a scoreless game through 65 minutes and blew it open in the final 25. Three Oglethorpe goals over a 10-minute stretch decided the game. The visitors broke through in the 66th minute, as freshman forward Javier Aponte finished off a feed from freshman midfielder Nico Chaulet to get the Petrels on the scoreboard. Then in the 75th minute, sophomore midfielder Fernando Guevara doubled the Oglethorpe advantage off an assist from junior forward Logan Llano. The visitors then completely put the contest to bed in the 76th minute, when sophomore midfielder Ian Farquhar took a feed from senior forward Gilberto Ramos and slotted it past the Millsaps goalkeeper.
The Petrels controlled the run-of-play throughout the game, peppering the Millsaps goal with 27 shots and putting 17 of them on target. Millsaps goalkeeper Kelvin Gardner kept his team in the game with 14 saves, but it wasn't enough as the Petrels eventually broke through. The Petrel defense allowed just seven Millsaps shots, with only one finding the target. Sophomore goalkeeper Ulises Rodriguez stopped that shot for his only save of the contest.
