Men's soccer season comes to close with 3-1 defeat in SAA semifinals

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team saw their season come to a close Friday evening with a 3-1 defeat to No. 2 seed Berry in the semifinal round of the SAA tournament in Birmingham, Alabama. It marked the first time since 2016 that the Stormy Petrels failed to make the championship round of the tournament. The result dropped the team to 4-2-2 to end the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Vikings opened the scoring in the 58th minute. The Petrels put things back on level terms in the 72nd minute, though, as sophomore midfielder Ian Farquhar scored on a free kick, seeming to set the game up for a tossup finish. Over a three-minute span, though, Berry took complete control of the contest. They scored the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute, then followed up by doubling their advantage in the 77th.

Needing two goals in 13 minutes, the Petrels found themselves behind the eight-ball. They had a couple of scoring chances after that, but junior forward Abraham Lopez had a shot saved in the 84th minute. Oglethorpe also won a penalty kick in the 87th minute, but sophomore midfielder Fernando Guevara had his shot saved by Berry goalkeeper Jose Palacios.

Oglethorpe fired five shots to Berry's four in the first half, and Petrel sophomore goalkeeper Ulises Rodriguez made a couple saves in the first half. He finished with five saves total. However, the Vikings outshot Oglethorpe 15-5 in the second half resulting in a 19-10 shot advantage for Berry overall. They outshot the Petrels 8-3 in efforts on frame. The Petrels did take six corner kicks to Berry's three.
