The Oglethorpe men's tennis team earned the second SAA regular season title in program history Saturday, defeating Millsaps 8-1 to secure a share of the crown for the first time since 2016. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 5-1 on the season in SAA play and 10-1 overall, marking their ninth straight win.
The Petrels got things off to a solid start in doubles play, winning two of their three matches to take a 2-1 lead. Freshmen Ameya Dani and Daniel Cohen took down their top-line match 8-4 while seniors Walker Benson and Calvin Schneider took their No. 2 match by the same score.
In singles competition, the Petrels found themselves in a series of tough matches, but they'd win each of them, including one in a third set and three more in second-set tiebreaks. Senior Zoe Raymond got things started with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. Freshman Vince Claussen followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 to give his team a 4-1 lead in the match. Schneider finished it off with a 6-2, 7-6(4) win at No. 4, securing the 7-4 win in his second-set tiebreak to clinch the win and a share of the conference title for the Petrels. After clinching the match, Benson followed with a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory at No. 3, Cohen beat his opponent 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 5 and Dani won his top-line match 6-4, 7-6(5).
The Petrels will finish their regular season with a non-conference match against the Majors at 10 a.m. Sunday. After that, they'll head to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, for the SAA tournament next weekend, where they'll be the No. 1 seed in the four-team event.
